Precision Rehabilitation to Counteract Age-Related Cognitive Decline

What Is This Study About?

This study will examine how different types of activities affect memory, thinking, and measures of brain health. Participants will be randomly assigned to either moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, yoga, or health education (includes light stretching and range of motion activities). Participants will attend one supervised session weekly and will complete the remaining sessions on their own. Participants will undergo assessments at three, six, and 12 months.

Do I Qualify To Participate in This Study?

Minimum Age: 65 Years

Maximum Age: 80 Years

Must have:

  • Sedentary (regular participation over the past 3 months in less than 60 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous leisure-time or transportation-related physical activity performed in bouts of less than 10 minutes)
  • Able to move around independently with or without a cane or walking stick
  • Able to walk at least 400 meters

Must NOT have:

  • Engaging in regular aerobic exercise, resistance exercise, or yoga exercise over the past 3 months
  • History of stroke, uncontrolled resting hypertension (systolic blood pressure of 150 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of 100 mmHg), congestive heart failure, recent myocardial infarction, or other contraindications to engagement in moderate-intensity physical activity for at least 10 continuous minutes
  • Incompatibility with magnetic resonance imaging (e.g. claustrophobia, metal implants, body size)
  • Consuming more than 1 alcoholic drink per day or more than 4 days per week, or current treatment for substance use disorder
  • Use of a walker or rolling walker
  • Short Physical Performance Battery score of less than 6 or unable to perform any of the 3 components of the total score
  • Depressive symptoms not controlled or treated.
  • Degenerative neurological condition (e.g., Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis)
  • Severe respiratory disease (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with shortness of breath) or use of supplemental oxygen
  • Amputation or prosthesis affecting lower limb below or above the knee
  • Modified Mini-Mental State Exam score less than 85
